The Changing Landscape of Gender Diversity in Indian Industries: 2017-2022

Gender diversity has gained significant traction in corporate India in recent years. In an evolving global workplace, the benefits of a diverse workforce, specifically with respect to gender, have been increasingly acknowledged. Research indicates that such diversity fosters creativity, innovation, and a deeper understanding of customer needs, thereby positively affecting the company's overall performance.


Progress in Gender Diversity in Indian Industries (2017-2022)


Between 2017 and 2022, the overall percentage of women in the workforce has shown an appreciable rise from 23% to 26%. This demonstrates a growing recognition of the role of women in the corporate world. However, the percentage of women in the workforce still varies across sectors.


Sectoral Breakdown


The IT and ITES sector has seen the most significant growth in gender diversity, boasting the highest percentage of women employees at 36%. This is likely due to the industry's progressive nature and its push towards creating a more inclusive work environment.

The retail sector follows close behind, with women constituting 34% of the employees. The rise in women employees in this sector can be attributed to the growing trend of urbanization and the expansion of organized retail in India.

The professional services sector, including consulting, holds the third position with women making up 32% of its workforce. This could be linked to the growing demand for diverse perspectives and skill sets in these areas.

However, not all sectors have seen this growth. The manufacturing sector still lags behind, with women making up only 18% of its workforce. The low percentage could be attributed to traditionally male-dominated roles and structural barriers that make it difficult for women to enter these fields.


The Glass Ceiling Effect


Despite the increase in the overall percentage of women in the workforce, a disparity remains with respect to seniority levels. This discrepancy is more pronounced in certain sectors such as IT/ITES, where women's representation decreases significantly in senior roles. Factors such as marriage and childbirth often disrupt career progression, contributing to this phenomenon.


Beyond the Binary


Discussions on diversity have also begun to recognize the importance of inclusion beyond cisgender norms, considering non-binary genders as well. The increasing discourse around this aspect of diversity highlights the progressive steps being taken towards comprehensive inclusivity.


Strategies for Encouragement


To continue the upward trend of women's participation in the workforce, it is necessary to address the challenges to achieving gender diversity. Implementing flexible work schedules and remote work policies, establishing mentorship programs, and providing targeted training initiatives could aid in attracting and retaining female talent. Moreover, the government must adopt a proactive role in promoting gender diversity through the establishment of supportive policies and programs.


The journey towards achieving gender diversity in corporate India is ongoing. Although the upward trend in women's participation in the workforce is encouraging, there is a considerable amount of progress to be made. A gender-diverse corporate landscape can not only enhance a company's performance and innovation capacity but also promote a more inclusive society. The concerted efforts of companies and the government provide an optimistic outlook for the future of gender diversity in Indian industries.
